At its simplest, progressive overload is the gradual increase of training demand. In strength training that can mean more load, more reps, more sets, denser work, greater range of motion, or a harder variation. Cleaner technique is not automatically more overload; it is evidence that the prescribed demand was executed reliably and may support a safer progression decision. The useful question is not “did the number go up?” but “did the training stimulus progress in a way the lifter can recover from and repeat?”
That distinction matters because exercises do not all progress the same way. A deadlift may progress in small load jumps. A lateral raise may be better served by reps, tempo, or controlled range. A pull-up may need bodyweight and weighted-bodyweight logic. A cable crunch, sled drag, or timed conditioning movement may need a different measurement type entirely.

This is why RAMM treats a performed result as evidence. The result is valuable, but it still needs to be read against the original prescription and the movement’s progression profile.

“Next goal should be 28 kg × 8 / 8 / 8 because the weakest set was 8.” This copies fatigue into the future without understanding why the set dipped.
Read the full pattern. A weak middle set followed by a stronger set may indicate rest timing, setup, or logging noise. The correct decision may be hold, review, or a more balanced target.
A progression is justified when completed performance supports the next demand and the movement can progress in that way. For a heavy compound lift, that may mean completing all prescribed reps with consistent set shape. For a cable or dumbbell isolation movement, it may mean reaching the top of a rep range cleanly before increasing load.
RAMM’s direction is to make that reasoning visible. The next target should be traceable to a prescription, recent execution, compatible measurement type, and deterministic rule.
Holding a target is often the smartest progression. If reps are near the edge of a range, form is inconsistent, rest was rushed, or fatigue is accumulating, repeating a target can build reliability without pretending progress stopped.
A hold also protects against overreacting to noisy data. One workout can contain travel fatigue, poor sleep, equipment changes, or controlled lower-volume work. Those should be recorded as context, not automatically treated as regression.
A useful progression system respects the exercise. Rows, presses, weighted dips, pull-ups, rear-delt work, curls, core training, distance work, and timed conditioning have different measurement needs. That is why RAMM’s architecture separates exercise definition from progression profile and routine prescription.
The exercise definition says what the movement is. The progression profile says how that kind of movement may progress. The routine prescription says what this user is meant to do in this routine.
A reduced session can be intelligent. You may deliberately train lighter to manage fatigue, practice controlled execution, or work around equipment. That does not mean the next prescription should collapse to the reduced number.
Pain or injury language should also be handled carefully. RAMM can record that a set was adjusted and require review. It should not diagnose the issue or claim to know that the lifter is recovered.

If a required input is missing or incompatible, the safer output is not a confident guess. It is review required. That protects progression history and keeps future goals explainable.
